What to check before you approve your kit artwork

A design proof is the moment to check the small details together: crest, sponsors, colours, spelling and the proposed garments.

It is easy to focus on the overall look of a new kit. Before approval, give the less dramatic details the same attention. Those are often the ones that are hardest to change later.

Confirm the garment and version

Check that the proof refers to the proposed garment and the latest design version. A shirt, goalkeeper option and training top may need separate confirmation.

Keep the design reference with the quote so the approved visual and the commercial specification can be read together.

Read every word and number

Check the club name, sponsor wording, player names and numbers wherever they appear. Ask another person to review them independently if possible.

Do not assume a spelling is right because it has appeared in an earlier email. The final approved version is the one that needs the complete check.

Look at placement as well as appearance

Review the crest, sponsor artwork, numbers and any other decoration on all relevant views. Ask about proposed sizes and positions if the proof does not make them clear.

Check that the artwork supplied is suitable for the agreed process. If you only have a small or unclear logo file, raise it before approval rather than assuming it will reproduce cleanly.

Discuss colours and materials

A screen image can be useful for comparing ideas, but it does not establish the exact appearance of the finished garment. Confirm the colour references, fabric and finish being quoted, and ask how colour decisions are handled for the order.

Any sample or additional confirmation you need should be discussed before committing to the specification.

Bring the specification back into view

Read the artwork alongside the garment list, quantity and size breakdown, personalisation details, quote and delivery arrangements. Check who is authorised to confirm on the team’s behalf.

If something changes, ask for the affected documents to be updated and review them again. A clear final record gives everyone the same starting point for the order.
